When choosing a HD camcorder you have three main types to choose from – ones that use tapes, ones that use hard drives, and ones that use flash memory.
Professional camcorder operators might swear by tape, but to be honest, the flexibility of hard drive or flash based camcorders, can save you valuable hours when converting your videos in digital format. With tape it can be a long, tortuous conversion process, but HD/flash camcorders can slash that time.
Should I choose a Hard Disk Drive based or flash camcorder? Well, if you typically see your videos being 5-10 minutes in length, e.g. just capturing the kids playing in the garden, or uploading one of your mates drunken antics up onto YouTube, a flash memory camcorder will suit you.
If instead you fancy yourself as a bit of an amateur Stanley Kubrick, racking up hours of footage per use, then a Hard Disk camcorder will be for you.
1080p or 720p? To be fair there’s not that much of a difference between 720p and 1080p when viewed on a TV, unless you really know what you are looking for the chances are you wont notice the difference, so don’t rule out 720p camcorders if you find one within your budget, but more and more HD camcorders are now supporting 1080p over 720p (as are display devices) so its probably worth forking out that bit extra for a Full HD 1080p camcorder at this moment in time.
